Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate a methyl alcohol extract of Enteromorpha linza (MEEL) for its anti-obesity effects. We demonstrated the inhibitory effects of MEEL on adipogenesis by investigating the lipolytic effects of MEEL in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Treatment with MEEL significantly suppressed terminal differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes in a dose-dependent manner, as confirmed by a decrease in lipid droplet content observed by Oil Red O staining. The concentrations of cellular triglycerides were also reduced in 3T3-L1 cells after treatment of MEEL as compared with the controls. Treatment with 300 and 500 ?g/ml of MEEL caused 67 and 19% reduction in lipid droplet content, respectively. In addition, MEEL significantly reduced the expression levels of key pro-adipogenic transcription factors including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ? (PPAR?), cytidine-cytidine-adinosine-adenosine- thymidine (CCAAT)/enhancer binding proteins ? (C/EBP?) and C/EBP? as compared with controls. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that MEEL showed strong anti-obesity effects
